A bit more on the personal side….
I was born in Havana, Cuba in 1957 and immigrated to Miami in 1961. We lived with several other family members in a house in the Westchester area of Miami until settling in Miami Beach for a few years with my two older brothers, Pablo and Alberto. Like any immigrant, my Dad struggled to find steady employment which he finally did in Vero Beach, FL. His work had us moving around between Vero Beach and Belle Glade, Florida for the next 13 years. My brothers attended University of Miami and settled in Miami. I graduated from Vero Beach High School in 1975, attended Indian River Community College and then proudly broke the mold to become the first “Gator” in the household by attending the University of Florida. I graduated in 1979 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education (Early Childhood) and moved to Miami where my parents now also live.
Fast forward through many years of teaching in Miami, mostly at Comstock Elementary, a bit of educational consulting work at St. Thomas Episcopal School, a few years as an administrative assistant for the Orange Bowl Corporation and a custom hair bow making business and we come to hopefully my last re-invention; a Realtor for the last 12 years. During this time, I was co-founder of the destination services company, Carreno & Caban Executive Destination Services, Inc. Independently of RE services, we provided assistance to many corporate relocation families as the local provider for larger international relocations companies. We dissolved the company a few years ago as the RE side of things became my priority, but I continue to provide these services on a case by case basis.
I married my husband, Pedro Alvarez AKA Tony, in 1984. We lived in Mexico City from 1991 through 1996. We returned to live in Coral Gables, a city within Miami-Dade County. We have three children; Georgia is 25, Sophia 22, and Danny 17. By May of this year all 3 of them will have become Gulliver Preparatory graduates. Georgia attended Stonehill College in the Boston area, went on to graduate school at Georgetown University, and is currently an 8th grade English teacher in Maryland and residing (living) in Virginia. Sophia attended Georgetown University as an undergrad. She recently completed her graduate studies in Politics and Foreign affairs, specializing in Latin America, at NYU and is currently looking for employment. The baby, born in Mexico what seems to have been yesterday, will be making his college acceptance decision this coming May and already has some wonderful options from which to choose.
My life as a Realtor has afforded me the opportunity to work extremely hard and succeed at something I thoroughly enjoy, while creating new and lasting friendships. Most importantly, and with the help of a wonderful team of co-workers, it has afforded me the flexibility to enjoy my children as they have become young adults. We love travelling to visit the girls and in Danny’s case to date, follow along in all his lacrosse adventures.
